Access control cards work in tandem with card readers that are situated by entrances to buildings or at the side of doors within the workplace to restrict access. In principle, the card is swiped or waved in front of the reader, which then processes and verifies the information on the card before granting access. Access cards are deemed more secure than standard keys as if the card is ever lost, or get's into the wrong hands, it can be deactivated instantly.
