How can access control cards be used in co-working spaces?

By on January 5th, 2020 in SCS News

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a co-working space then it is essentially an office space that is not occupied by one individual business but is used by multiple small businesses or individuals, either at the same time or in different shifts throughout the week.

Co-working spaces are often large office spaces, shared by smaller organisations who would otherwise end up working alone at home or out of coffee shops, so these dedicated work spaces offer affordable, creative and productive areas for work to get done.

But how can using access control cards play a part in these spaces? Here’s four reasons.

1. Safeguarding security

Co-working spaces still operate in the same way as any other office building and need to only be accessible to those who have the rights to enter, so access control systems can ensure this.

Providing users of the space with an access control card when they sign up to use the space means they can access the building when required and allows for access control systems to be used on the main doors to stop intruders.

2. Dedicating specific areas

Co-working spaces can sometimes be buildings with multiple rooms and individuals can hire specific rooms for use on specific days of the week, as their own dedicated working space, so by using an access control system, you can lock off different spaces, tailoring the access.

If someone does pay extra for use of a specific space on a regular basis, you can alter the settings of their access control card to not just have access to general areas but to that room too.

3. Clocking usage and times

Each individual access control card has its own unique ID which is identified by the system when the card is scanned or swiped, which means with many access control systems, you can monitor who has accessed where and when.

This is a great feature in a co-working space as it allows you to keep track of who has been using the different workspaces and when, ensuring they are paying for the time they are using the space and only accessing specific spaces when they should be.

4. Identification checks

As co-working spaces often see many different people coming through the doors every single day, some regularly and some less frequently, it can be difficult as the owner/manager of the building to keep track of who does and doesn’t have the right to be there.

Doubling up your access control cards as photo ID cards, given to the individuals who pay to use the space, allows you to monitor exactly who is coming in and out of the building, ensuring their access is not just restricted to what they require but they actually have the right to be in the building full stop.

Access control systems play a key role in co-working spaces, providing an array of services for both the owners of the space and the users. You can find useful access control guides and helpful product support information in our dedicated hub.
